January is National Soup Month. To celebrate the month, you can stick with a classic chicken noodle or tomato soup. Or, try something more adventurous such as a spicy chili or a gazpacho (cold vegetable soup). Keep in mind the following when choosing your perfect cup of soup:
- Soup recipes are easy to modify. You can usually easily swap out ingredients to match your cravings or to use foods you already have on hand.
- As a general rule, creamy soups have more calories than clear broth-based soups. Choose a soup that matches your nutritional needs.
- If you have difficulty swallowing, try searching for recipes for blended soups.
- To save time, you can make a large batch of soup and then freeze individual portions to reheat later.
- To add texture or flavor to soup, add toppings such as tortilla strips, croutons, low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt, or shredded cheese.
- If buying canned soups, look for low-sodium options.
