One of the best things about the month of June is fresh produce tasty fruits and vegetables, fresh from your garden, a roadside stand, the farmer’s market or from a nearby farm. Fresh produce is also full of healthy nutrients to fight the side effects of cancer and reduce your risk of cancer recurrence.
We hear a lot about buying food close to home, produce that is locally grown. Local fruits and vegetables are beneficial. They travel less from farm to table. You can enjoy local foods at the peak of freshness, when nutrient content is in full bloom, so to speak. Taste is also at its best no pesky waiting for the food to ripen for peak flavor. Farm fresh food can also be cheaper than food from a grocery store. Fresh fruits and veggies are “nature’s fast food” when you think about it. They are ready to eat when you get them home. I’ve even been known to eat quite a few fresh strawberries on the drive home from our farmer’s market!
Where can you find a local farmer’s market, farm stands, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group, or farm where you can pick produce yourself? Your local Agricultural Extension Office in your county can give you that info. Or, if you like to search online, check out these websites to find the fresh farm food you love:
Stay fresh and enjoy the flavors of June, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month!
