What I've Learned in my First Year of Cancer Survivorship by Tom Foster

This Monday, August 23, the 10th Annual Nashville Men's Event will take place at Morton's The Steakhouse.  Over 200 influential men, who support The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, will attend.  Click here for additional information on the Men's Event.  The blog entry below is from one of the event's co-chairs, Mr. Tom Foster.  Tom is President of Interior Design Services, Inc.

What a difference a year can make.  Having attended the Men’s Event for the last six years, I knew it was a special time and special opportunity to learn about prostate cancer.  However,  I was at the Event to socialize and have a good time — nothing wrong with that, but the Cancer thing, well that was for “others.”  Last year was a different story.  I had just found out that it was for me — I had cancer.

Last years Men’s Event was the same fun event, but I had changed and it was here last year that so many friends, some new and some old started sharing their cancer experience.  It had become a time for sharing, caring and opening up of personal experience. I was very touched by all the concern and help, the offers of “we are in this together.”  I became convinced that night that I would make it through this uncertain time.  If you need that same help then tonight is your night to reach out and claim the wonderful support that is in this room.

Thanks to these friends and wonderful doctors along with the leading edge research at SCRI I am once again enjoying this special time.  Remember you are not in this alone.
