Join 9 Years of Tradition: The Women's Event by Jane Meredith Main
Many of us have volunteered on committees for established fund raisers, but starting one from scratch in 2003 was a challenging experience. The Women’s Event was conceived by The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation Social Worker Susan Gregory and, as a Board member, I was asked to gather committees and lay the ground work of organization with Sally Dadmun-Bixby, Director of Development.
We crossed our fingers that women would want to come and worked hard to plan every detail, including inviting author and cancer survivor Chris Hilicki and Dr. Denise Yardley, Director of Breast Cancer Research at Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, to be our inaugural keynote speakers. The luncheon was intended to kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and included a silent auction and gourmet luncheon at Nashville’s historic Hermitage Hotel. On September 30th we were thrilled to welcome a sold-out ballroom full of ardent supporters. It was such a relief to hear a friend say, “Your event is launched!”
For the last eight Septembers, we have been blessed with dedicated volunteers who breathe life into The Women’s Event year after year. We are enthusiastically at work again for the September 20th event at Cool Springs Embassy Suites, which will have President Gerald Ford’s daughter, Susan Ford Bales, bringing a poignant message. Her mother, the late Betty Ford, was a breast cancer survivor who bravely shared her experience with the public in a time when that was not usually done, especially by a First Lady of the United States. It will be a very special ninth Women’s Event.
